The Obon Dance Festival finally
The Obon Dance Festival finally returns to our Upper Westside neighborhood and for the first time we will celebrate the event right around the corner from NYBC on 106th Street. The Obon Committee has worked tirelessly to finally secure the approval to have the festival in our own “backyard.”
We will have Obon circle dancing for all to join, Taiko drumming, origami for the children and other activities. Come out, dance and celebrate with our community.
Practice and learn the dances in the Hondo hall from 6:30-8:00 pm on July 1, 3, 8 and 10. You can come to any or all practice sessions, or you can learn on the day of the event. We welcome everyone to participate, it’s open to the public. We look forward to seeing you!

Soh Daiko will join our
Soh Daiko will join our sister taiko group Hoh Daiko once again in Seabrook, NJ for Seabrook Buddhist Temple’s 80th annual Obon Festival. We hope you can join us for a wonderful evening of dancing, drumming, and friendship!
Obon is an annual Buddhist event intended to honor one’s ancestors. During this time, it is believed that the spirits of our ancestors return to this world to visit their relatives. Traditionally, lanterns (“obon,” in Japanese) are hung in front of one’s home to guide the spirits along their way.
